1989-90

Played from 09/1989 to 10/1990

Format

season officially known as 1989, but it lasted from September 1989 to October 1990; after a triple round robin between 10 clubs (327 matches each for all clubs), the top-6 qualified for the championship playoff (a double round robin, 10 matches for all clubs involved); the bottom club after the regular phase was relegated.

as Saprissa won both tournaments, no final was played

as the 1990 edition was cancelled (the "1989" edition finished in October 1990!), Palmares were eventually reprieved and Guanacasteca promoted as well, so that the 1990/91 (officially 1991) edition was played with 12 clubs
